Packets and Parcels

Addressing Parcels to Indonesia

Indonesian addresses use four levels of localities. The localities and sub-localities used in the addresses refer, in the majority of cases, to the administrative divisions of the country as follows:

Locality – Admin level – English – Indonesian

  • Not used in address – 1  – Province Provinsi
  • Locality – 2 – City/Regency – Kabupaten/Kota
  • Sub-locality – 3 – District – Kecamatan
  • Sub-locality – 4 – Village – Desa/Kelurahan
  • Sub-locality – 5 RT/RW – Rukun Tetengga /Rukun Warga

Jakarta is a special case of a locality because it is an administrative division of level 1 called Province. The acronym RT/RW stands for Rukun Tetengga/Rukun Warga. In addresses, only ‘RT’ followed with two numbers separated with slash (ex. RT 01/001) is used. This is to identify areas of neighborhood groups/citizen groups that do not have administrative power but were created to support administrative functions of sub-districts.

Here is the template for urban addresses:

  • Addressee
  • Street + premise
  • Locality + postcode
  • Country

Which is practice looks like:

  • Ibu Wisynuprapto
  • Jl. Ciburial Indah No. 47
  • BANDUNG 40198

Here is another template for an urban address, if the addressee lives on a dependent street:

  • Addressee
  • Street, sub-street, premise + sub-loc 3
  • Locality + postcode
  • Country

Which would look like in reality:

  • Ibu Yuwono
  • Jl. Margacinta I, Gg. Anggur No. 8 RT 01/001
  • BANDUNG 40286

For rural addresses, the following format is used:

  • Addressee
  • Sub-loc 2 + sub-locality 3
  • Sub-loc
  • Locality + postcode
  • Country

Which on a real parcel would look like:

  • Kampung Sukabatu RT 01/03
  • Malangbong
  • GARUT 44188
